Beer Fest
So last weekend I had a chance to get out to Beer Fest. We headed down on Friday night had a great dinner at Rockwater Brewing Co before going across the street to the event. Rockwater, by the way, has a good selection of beer on tap. I was surprised, I haven’t been there in a couple of year. They even served KLB Raspberry Wheat which I have not been able to find anywhere else in London. If you know any other place that serves it PLEASE let me know! As for the Beer Fest, I was a bit disappointed by the small number of breweries that were there. I’m not much for going to events like that and trying Keiths or Stella. Not that I don’t like them, after all I’ve never had a bad beer, it’s just that I can get them anywhere. Aside from the representation of the typical beer’s there was only a hand full of others. There was some really great new beers that I got to try. A few real standouts were the Apple Pilsner from Nickel Brook, which I was surprised by how well the apple flavour combined with the beer not something I would have tried if I’d saw it in the Beer Store. To stay with the fruit mixes McClelland Premuim Imports had a great Strawberry beer that tasted almost exactly like Strawberry juice. Heritage Brewing had a great Maple Bush Lager that was made with Maple Sap that had just a hint of sweetness that was also very good. Big Rock was also there and they brought their Grasshopper Wheat Ale and Traditional Ale which I really liked. All said and done I think it’s a great idea for an event it just need some more support. Aside from more breweries supporting the event one problem I found was the music was just too loud. I love live and loud music this just wasn’t the setting for it. I’d like to be able to talk to the people at the booths about the beer and their breweries. That atmosphere wasn’t there, sometimes due to the people working the booths and the loud music didn’t help. I also thought that the admission, over $20 each person, was a little steep for the current experience, if the event grows it would be well worth the money. All in all it wasn’t an entirely bad event, I would go again next year and I’ll keep hoping they improve every year!
