Next Door Results

So we had dinner at Next Door the other night and I have to say I don’t know if it’s a place I will hurry back to any time soon. The entry way that opens into the bar area is quite impressive when you first walk in but soon after the effect wears off and I lothed the waste of space. I think the layout of the dining area wastes so much space and it makes everything feel cramped. It felt like we were eating dinner with the couple at the next table. My next point of displeasure was the wine glasses. The wine menu was quite nice but the enjoyment was removed when it was served in a glass that does not allow for full enjoyment of the wine. The glass was more of a deep martini glass rather then a bowled wine glass. It killed all the aroma in what I think is a very nice wine (Gray Fox Cabernet Sauvignon 2005) . That appatisers were very good, we split the crab cakes and a ceaser salad, both of which were excelent. I had orderd the Steak and it was well over done for a medium rare steak. Michelle, who likes Med. Well to Well done, whoud not have sent it back. The Mashed potatoes that accompanied it were very good and the asparagus and vegitable were cooked to perfection. I probably will not go back for quite some time but I will give the some time and see if they approve. Anyone else been to either Next Door or Crave have an experiance to share?

  • I haven't been to either. I tend to bristle when I read the tag line, "upscale, urban casual dining environment." The language is just a little too high-fallutin for me.

My skittishness notwithstanding, the fact that they're doing so well that they've expanded is great news for the business community in that area. The entire corner is under pressure from the expanding Hyde Park power corner, with retailers slowly but surely bleeding west. This particular stretch of the mall was formerly a weak spot with the Burger King and the Country Style - both less-than-stellar establishments that were perenially mismanaged into being blights on the rest of the development - and the new one-two punch of Crave and Next Door has given it a bit of a boost.

I'll pass, though: the marketing-speak to justify paying significantly more for an experience that's roughly identical to that found anywhere else is all just a little too contrived for me.
